The simple fuel cost formula

Every fuel cost calculator, including ours, uses the same three-step formula:

• Fuel needed (litres) = Total distance (KM) ÷ Vehicle average (KM per litre)
• Total trip cost (PKR) = Fuel needed × Current fuel price per litre
• Cost per kilometre = Total trip cost ÷ Total distance

Example: 250 km on a car giving 14 km/L, at PKR 290/L petrol, uses 17.85 litres and costs around PKR 5,178 — roughly PKR 20.71 per kilometre.

How petrol & diesel prices are set in Pakistan (the OGRA mechanism)

Fuel prices in Pakistan are notified every 15 days by the Government of Pakistan on the recommendation of OGRA (Oil & Gas Regulatory Authority). The final pump price is built from seven components:

• Ex-refinery price based on the fortnightly Arab Gulf Platts benchmark
• Inland Freight Equalization Margin (IFEM) so prices stay the same across Pakistan
• Petroleum Development Levy (PDL) — a government revenue tax
• Customs duty on imported fuel
• GST (currently 0% or 17% depending on the notification)
• OMC margin (the fee for PSO, Shell, Total-PARCO, Attock)
• Dealer's commission at the pump

Because prices depend on international Platts and the USD-PKR rate, they change on the 1st and 16th of every month. You can verify your local pump against the official notification on the OGRA petroleum prices page or on PSO consumer product prices.

Factors that affect your trip cost

• Traffic: stop-and-go driving can cut mileage 25–40%.
• Driving style: hard acceleration and hard braking burn 20–30% more fuel.
• Vehicle condition: dirty air filter, old spark plugs and low tyre pressure each cost 3–10%.
• AC use: below 60 km/h open windows are more efficient; above 80 km/h AC wins.
• Load: every extra 50 kg costs roughly 1–2% mileage.
• Fuel quality: adulterated fuel from unbranded pumps reduces mileage and damages injectors.
• Weather: cold starts, rain and headwinds each cost 5–10%.

Petrol vs Diesel: which costs less per KM in Pakistan?

Because diesel is typically PKR 5–20 more expensive per litre than petrol in 2026, and diesel engines are only fitted in bigger vehicles (Hiace, SUVs, pickups, trucks), the per-km picture depends on your specific car.

• Small petrol car (13 km/L, PKR 285/L): ~PKR 21.9 / km
• Diesel Hilux Revo (10 km/L, PKR 295/L): ~PKR 29.5 / km
• Diesel Hiace (11 km/L, PKR 295/L): ~PKR 26.8 / km — but per seat it beats any petrol car because you carry 12–14 passengers.

Diesel wins in commercial and long-distance use because torque and engine life extend thousands of extra kilometres per rupee. For a private daily driver, petrol is almost always cheaper per km.

Why cost per kilometre matters for ride-hailing drivers

If you drive for InDrive, Careem, Yango, Bykea or Uber, your real profit is fare − PKR/km − platform commission − maintenance. Before accepting a long ride: if your car costs PKR 22 per km and the ride pays PKR 25 per km after commission, you only earn PKR 3 per km — rarely worth the wear.

• Keep tyres inflated to the door-sticker PSI — under-inflation can cut mileage 10%.
• Change engine oil and air filter on the manufacturer's schedule.
• Drive smoothly; anticipate signals and coast in gear.
• Use AC sensibly (open windows below 60 km/h, AC above 80 km/h).
• Empty the boot — every 50 kg costs 1–2% mileage.
